James R. Vogt, II

"From the mountains of Colo to Spica - we love you"
1966 - 2020

James “Jim” Vogt II of Idaho Springs passed away on Nov 17, 2020.

He was a devoted husband to his wife Stephanie for 27 years and a loving father to his son Caden. He was a son, brother, friend, and a fun uncle.

A Colorado native, Jim was born on Feb 25, 1966 in Denver, Colorado. He attended Colorado State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

He became a police officer and went on to have a long and decorated career in law enforcement, rising to supervisory ranks and receiving numerous awards and honors.

He spent many hours fundraising and volunteering for various organizations including the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Colorado Special Olympics, and the American Red Cross. He was active in his local community as a youth soccer coach for his son’s team as well as serving as a Cub Scout Den leader.

Jim and Stephanie loved the mountains, so they made it their home, building a beautiful log home high in the Rockies with very little “professional” help. Maintaining their home was a labor of love, and Jim spent much of his spare time caring for it. He never could get grass to grow despite years of trying!

He will always be remembered for his zest for life, outgoing personality, generous spirit and bold clothing choices! Jim was the life of the party, never met a stranger and went out of his way to ensure everyone around him was having fun. He was a great cook and shared this gift by making elaborate and delicious meals for his loved ones. He loved to travel, go camping and had a passion for science, especially astronomy.

He taught astronomy to 6th grade students when he was in high school and spent many nights gazing through telescopes. He was an avid “Ancient Alien” fan.

He will be missed by his family and friends, but we will take comfort that he is where he would love to be .... up in the stars.
